How To - VPN

    What is VPN?

Several online resources (for example, library databases) are accessible only from SSE Riga campus network. This means you have to be present in SSE Riga premises or connect to SSE Riga VPN connection to use them. VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a way of connecting to SSE Riga campus network remotely from anywhere in the world.
VPN access is enabled by default for all SSE Riga students! Set up a VPN connection by following the instructions below.

    Quick setup
    VPN server IP address:    195.122.30.130
    Connection/VPN type:       L2TP/IPSec with pre-shared key
    Pre-shared key:                 2vpn@SSE
    Username:                         [your SSE Riga account username]
    Password:                          [your SSE Riga account password]


    Windows - Setting Up The Connection

Make sure you already have a working Internet connection; switch off any software that may cause lots of unnecessary Internet traffic (torrents, etc.)

  1. Go to Control Panel - Network and Sharing Center or right-click the network icon on the bottom-right side of Windows screen, and click Open Network and Sharing Center.

  2. Select Set up a new connection or network

  3. Select Connect to a workplace (VPN) -> Next (If prompted, choose No, create a new connection)

  4. Select Use my Internet connection (VPN) -> Next

  5. Under Internet address type: 195.122.30.130
    Under Destination name type any connection name that is more convenient for you
    Check Don't connect now; just set up so I can connect later checkbox on the bottom of the screen


  6. Type your SSE Riga username as username and your SSE Riga password as password; leave Domain field empty. Click Create
    This is the same username and password used to access SSE Riga e-learning platform, e-mail etc. Username should be typed without "sseriga\".


  7. When The connection is ready to use message appears, click the Close button. Do not click the Connect now button


  8. Go to Network and Sharing Center and click Change adapter settings



  9. Right click on the VPN connection you created previously, and click Properties



  10. On the Properties screen, switch to the Security tab.
    Make sure Data Encryption is set to Require encryption (disconnect if server declines).
    Make sure to allow the CHAP and MS-CHAP v2 protocols as pictured below.
    Choose Layer 2 Tunneling Protocol with IPsec (L2TP/IPSec) on the Type of VPN drop-down list. Then click the Advanced settings button



  11. Click Use preshared key for authentication. Type in 2vpn@SSE as the pre-shared secret. After you are done, click OK twice to close the configuration windows


    Windows - Connecting To VPN

  1. After you have set up the connection once, you will simply need to connect to this connection. On the network selection (same place where you would connect to WiFi networks) select the VPN connection and login with your username and password


  2. If the VPN connection is successfully established, a VPN connection icon will be listed on the screen which appears when you click the network icon on the bottom-right of Windows screen. The status of the VPN connection icon should be "Connected" .
    You can initiate the VPN connection by simply clicking this VPN icon from now on.
    !!! Remember to disconnect from VPN when you finish your work with SSE Riga resources !!!
        

    MacOSX - Setting Up The Connection

  1. Click the network icon on the top-right side on the Mac screen. Click Open Network Preferences... in the menu


  2. Click the "+" button on the network configuration screen

  3. Under Interface select VPN
    Under VPN Type select L2TP over IPSec
    Under Service Name type any connection name that is more convenient for you
    Click the Create button


  4. Set Server Address to 195.122.30.130
    Set Account Name to your SSE Riga username.
    This is the same username you would use to access SSE Riga e-learning platform, e-mail etc. Username should be typed without "sseriga\".
    Next, click the Authentication Settings... button.

  5. Under Password type in your SSE Riga password.
    This is the same password you would use to access SSE Riga e-learning platform, e-mail etc. 
    Under Machine Authentication, select Shared Secret and type in 2vpn@SSE
    Click the OK button




  6. After return to the previous screen, check the "Show VPN status in menu bar" and click the "Advanced..." button


  7. Check the "Send all traffic over VPN connection" and click the "OK" button

    MacOSX - Connecting To VPN

    1. You can start a new VPN connection by clicking the Connect button at any time. You can also initiate a VPN connection by clicking the VPN icon on the menu bar
      After the VPN connection will be established, the VPN connection setting screen will become as below as the Status will be Connected
      !!! Remember to disconnect from VPN when you finish your work with SSE Riga resources !!!


        Phones and Tablets

    The configuration details for SSE Riga VPN connections are:
    • Internet address/Server address is  195.122.30.130
    • User name/Account name will be your SSE Riga username
    • Password will be your SSE Riga password
    • The preshared key for authentification/Shared secret is 2vpn@SSE
    • Domain doesn’t need to be specified and should always be left blank
